Lil' Devil Baby Hat

 For your favorite little demon.

Materials

 Worsted weight wool (I used Brown Sheep Naturespun) -- It must be red!

1 16" circular needle, size 7,
one set of double pointeds, size 7
Stitch markers

Gauge: (approximate) 4 sts. to the inch

Directions

Cast on 70 stitches, using invisible cast on method. Work 1" in garter stitch on circular needles (in the round, this is k one row, p one row). Switch to stockinette stitch for 3.5". Put a stitch marker after every 10th stitch.

Reduction Rows: (switch to double pointeds when necessary) *K2 tog. before each marker, knit one round plain* 3 times, then k2 together before marker on every round until there are 7 stitches left on needle. Break off yarn, leaving a fairly long tail. Draw tail through remaining 7 sts, pull firmly, and draw through to inside of hat.

Earflaps and Ties

Pick up 70 stitch cast-on edge. Starting with back of hat, cast off 12, knit 11 onto holder, cast off 24, knit 11 onto holder, cast off 12. Earflaps are now on holders.

Earflap: Work in garter stitch. knit 3 rows, next row, k1, k2 tog, knit to last 3 sts, k2 tog, k1. Decrease in this manner, every other row, until there are 3 sts left. Work these 3 sts as an I-cord (e-mail me privately for I-cord instructions) for desired length of tie. Stay on needle.

Devil tail ends: Cast on 1 stitch at either side of I-cord (5 sts). Knit 2 rows, reduce 1 stitch each end (3 sts). Knit 2 rows, k2 tog, k1, turn, k2 tog (1 st). Break off yarn. Draw end through last stitch, pull firmly, Draw end up through I-cord to hide. Repeat for other side.

Horns

Mark where you want horns with a safety pin. Try to place symmetrically, above earflaps. Pick up 12 sts in a triangle, using 3 double pointeds, 4 stitches on each needle. Join yarn and knit 3 rounds stockinette stitch. Then k2, k2tog, on each needle. Knit 2 rounds plain. K1, k2 tog on each needle. Knit 1 round plain. K2 tog on each needle (3 sts left). Break off yarn, leaving a fairly long tail. Draw through remaining 3 sts firmly to form a point, then pull down through horn to inside of hat and weave in end. Repeat for other horn.

Finishing

Weave in ends.
